This gigantic drain terrifies me but also is so interesting I want to throw myself down it…
Located at the Monticello Dam at Lake Berryessa in Northern California, this gigantic drain acts as the lake's spillway.
Technically known as the Morning Glory Spillway it is locally, somewhat more colorfully, known as "The Glory Hole." When the dam reaches capacity, the spillway swallows water at a rate of 48,800 cubic feet per second, emptying about 700 feet away through an enormous concrete pipe.
Not a safe place to swim, in 1997, a UC Davis graduate student was pulled into the glory hole while swimming and drowned.
This bird was more lucky:
The dam and spillway were constructed between 1953 and 1957, choking off Putah Creek and drowning the remains of the town of Monticello. At very low water levels, the foundations of the town can be seen in parts of the lake.
Very interesting history of the destruction of Monticello in following video:
The outside diameter is 72 feet, slowly narrowing to 28 feet at the exit. While this is the largest drain of its kind, there are other Glory Hole spillways around the world, including one in Pleasant Hill Lake in Perrysville, Ohio.
Here’s a drone video showing the inside of the huge concrete pipe:
Mid March was the second time this year, after beginning of February 2025, that the Glory hole was active again…
Before that, it hadn’t drained water since 2019…
Amazing isn’t it? Let’s hope this excess water will continue to be a new normal in drought-stricken California…

Thank you and have a great Tuesday,

Once you decide to open your eyes to question the things you see, it can never be undone. For example, anyone who heard the man who filmed the bird going into the hole stating how he saw (with his own eyes says the reporter) the bird coming out the other end alive but dazed, most people wouldn't question anything about it, in fact, it wouldn't even cross their minds to question it.
However, I have some questions; the biggest one being, where is the footage of the bird coming out the other end? The man said he, "bolted to the other end and made it just in time to see the bird coming out" but what? did he drop his camera on the way down? Why is there no footage of the other end? I'll tell you why.
The hole is 200 feet from one end to the other. The bird would have covered that distance in approximately 3.5 seconds or 77 mph at the speed of falling water! Could this man FLY because that is the ONLY way he could have made it from where he was at the top of the hole to the bottom in time to see the bird emerge from the other side. So the answer to my question of why is there no video of the bird coming out the other end, we know now; he lied. Why did he lie? Oh, I forgot, it's a CBS (MSM) story. They lie. Period.
Thank you for that very interesting story, Manuel!! ;-)
