Gravity Isn’t Flat, Italy Won’t Stop Shaking, and the Deep Ocean Isn’t Plastic-Free
NASA unveils the true shape of Earth’s gravity, Campi Flegrei experiences its strongest earthquake in decades, scientists discover microplastics in one of Earth’s most isolated ecosystems.
🌎 EARTH SIGNALS FOR AUGUST 2, 2026
Good morning, friends.
After a Swiss National Day without fireworks or wildfires (at least where I live)...
a welcome surprise.
Today’s signals from our wonderfully restless planet:
🌍 NASA reveals Earth’s real shape.
🌋 Italy’s restless supervolcano produces its strongest earthquake in forty years.
🌋 Sakurajima erupts again in Japan.
🌊 Microplastics have now reached deep-sea hydrothermal vents.
🐋 Hundreds of humpback whales gather in what may be the largest supergroup ever recorded.
☁️ NASA launches a mission to chase wildfire thunderstorms.
🐄 Swiss cows are being struck by a mysterious disease.
Let’s dive in.
🏆 Best Story of the Day
🌍 Earth Isn’t Round... And It Isn’t Flat Either
Forget the globe you’ve seen your entire life.
NASA has released an extraordinary new interactive 3D model of Earth’s geoid—the true shape our planet’s gravity creates.
If Earth’s oceans were perfectly calm, with no tides, winds or currents, this is the shape the sea surface would naturally take.
The result looks almost...
alien.
Gravity pulls harder in some places than others, creating invisible hills and valleys across the world’s oceans. The highest “gravity hill” rises roughly 85 meters near Iceland, while one of the deepest gravity depressions sits south of India, more than 100 meters below the average geoid.
The model combines more than a billion satellite measurements collected over fifteen years by missions including GRACE and GOCE.
Earth turns out to be far stranger than the smooth blue marble hanging in classrooms.

🌋 Italy Won’t Sit Still
The Campi Flegrei volcanic caldera near Naples has just experienced its strongest recorded earthquake in forty years.
A shallow magnitude 4.7 quake injured at least 26 people, damaged buildings across Pozzuoli, and triggered more than 60 aftershocks within hours.
Scientists stress this does not necessarily mean an eruption is imminent.
But Campi Flegrei remains one of the world’s most closely watched volcanic systems.
When the ground beneath a supervolcano starts moving...
people pay attention.

🌋 Japan’s Most Active Volcano Keeps Going
Sakurajima erupted once again this week, launching a 1,600-meter ash plume into the sky.
The blast marked the volcano’s 15th explosive eruption of 2026, reminding residents of southern Japan that living beside one of Earth’s most active volcanoes is never boring.
For Sakurajima...
this is almost business as usual.
☁️ NASA Wants to Fly Into Firestorms
Some wildfires become so intense...
they create their own thunderstorms.
NASA has launched INSPYRE, a new airborne research campaign that will spend the rest of the summer flying around massive western U.S. wildfires to study the mysterious pyrocumulonimbus clouds they produce.
These towering smoke thunderstorms can inject ash into the stratosphere, generate lightning, and even start entirely new fires dozens of kilometers away.
Wildfires are becoming weather systems of their own.
🌊 Now Even the Deep Sea Isn’t Safe
Scientists have discovered microplastics in animals living around hydrothermal vents nearly 2,000 meters beneath the ocean surface.
Researchers examined twelve animals from one of Earth’s most remote environments.
Eleven contained plastic.
For years we assumed the deepest oceans remained untouched by human pollution.
Apparently...
they don’t.
🧬 Sugar’s Dark Side
Scientists at the Wistar Institute have discovered an unexpected link between fructose and the spread of ovarian cancer.
Rather than simply feeding tumors, fructose appears to act as a chemical messenger, allowing chemotherapy-resistant cancer cells to encourage neighboring cancer cells to spread.
It’s an early discovery...
but one that could eventually change how researchers think about metastasis itself.

🦠 Another Tick-Borne Virus Appears
Researchers have confirmed New York’s first documented case of Bourbon virus, a rare illness spread by lone star ticks.
Because symptoms closely resemble several other tick-borne diseases—and routine testing is uncommon—scientists suspect infections may already be going unnoticed.
Ticks continue expanding their range.
So do the diseases they carry.

🌋 The Volcano Nobody Saw Erupt
Most of Earth’s volcanoes erupt where nobody can see them.
Scientists have now pieced together evidence of a secret submarine eruption beneath the Bismarck Sea near Papua New Guinea.
It began with a swarm of small earthquakes.
Then satellites spotted strange plumes, discolored seawater, and eventually enormous rafts of floating pumice drifting across the ocean.
The eruption itself?
No one witnessed it.
The ocean keeps most of Earth’s volcanic activity hidden beneath the waves.

🐄 Switzerland’s Cows Have a Mystery Illness
Swiss veterinarians are investigating a mysterious disease affecting dairy cattle across the country.
The symptoms include fever, diarrhea and a dramatic drop in milk production.
So far...
no one knows what’s causing it.
Officials say there is currently no evidence that milk or meat pose any risk to consumers, but farmers are becoming increasingly worried as heat, drought, expensive feed and sick animals all collide during one of the toughest summers in years.
Sometimes nature gives us mysteries with no obvious answers.

📚 AI’s Appetite for Books
Australian booksellers are sounding the alarm after discovering that rare and second-hand books may be entering an AI supply chain.
The process is simple.
Books are purchased...
digitized...
then destroyed.
Collectors fear irreplaceable editions are disappearing forever simply to become training data.
The digital age keeps raising uncomfortable questions.
🏥 Medical First
Vietnamese surgeons have successfully completed the country’s first penis transplant.
The complex microsurgical procedure restored function for a patient who had suffered a devastating injury.
It’s one of those medical breakthroughs that sounds almost impossible...
until someone actually does it.
🌋 Volcano vs. Sun
An Italian photographer recently captured glowing lava arcing through the night sky above Mount Etna.
At first glance...
the image looks remarkably similar to the enormous magnetic loops produced after major solar flares.
The shapes are almost identical.
The physics couldn’t be more different.
One is molten rock.
The other is superheated plasma.
Nature seems to enjoy repeating its favorite designs.

😲 Weirdest Story
💎 A Stone That Looks Like Its Own Universe
An opal discovered in Queensland, Australia appears to contain...
its own sky.
The remarkable gemstone displays swirling blues, whites and dark clouds that resemble looking through a window into another world.
Sometimes geology creates better art than humans ever could.
❤️ Best Story of the Day
🐋 When Nature Gets a Chance
Nearly 300 humpback whales were recently counted feeding together off South Africa.
Researchers believe it may be the largest whale supergroup ever recorded.
Just forty years ago, commercial whaling had reduced Southern Hemisphere humpback populations to fewer than 10,000 animals.
Today...
there are more than 100,000.
Proof that conservation isn’t just about preventing extinctions.
Sometimes it brings giants back.

"Earth Isn’t Round... And It Isn’t Flat Either"?? Wait, so what about the NASA earth images from the space with earth's perfectly ROUND circumference, from MANY space trips, satellites, etc., etc.... from all the previous decades, we've been fed?????
Next one. ABout the 'Sugar’s Dark Side', go to https://medicalxpress.com and search to see:
-Remdesivir for COVID-19 linked to better outcomes for adult kidney transplant recipients
-Vaccine mis‑ and disinformation aren't just a threat to public health, but also to our autonomy
-How vaccine skeptics use storytelling effectively to create powerful but medically inaccurate messaging
etc., etc... It is NOT just ONE LIE, ALL ARE LIES!!!!
This is a REAL EMERGENCY, the AI COMPANIES destroying books,
and it is NOT 'may be', it is REAL, reported by MANY different resources citing DIFFERENT COMPANIES!!! it's the next dark side of the AI busi-ness! This is very similar to what GATES and Co. did to ORGANIC SEEDS of most plants (now stored in deep cold Svalbard Global Seed Vault) BEFORE introducing toxic lethal GMO's, for everybody...
This one: "Vietnamese surgeons have successfully completed the country’s first penis transplant." could trigger a wave of dry freeze studies of removed organs from gender 'unhappy' HUMANS. One day they might rethink their 'dec-I-sion'!
"Switzerland’s Cows Have a Mystery Illness" Everything's a mystery to the "experts". Maybe one of them ought to look up at the sky and see them spraying it and us like lab rats and say to themselves, "hmm, I wonder what they're spraying". I'll tell you why they don't do that...because they KNOW what they're spraying~! And the destruction of books! That's just a modern day book burning. They feed all the info into AI and then AI can tell us what they all said! NOT!
