Yesterday, SpaceX launched a spy satellite for the US National Reconnaissance Office (NRO)…
Two hours later, a magnificent blue spiral appeared over western Europe:
It was a de-orbit burn and fuel dump from the Falcon 9 rocket's second stage. The rocket body was spinning when the fuel dump occured--hence the spiral.
Spirals are an increasingly routine by-product of SpaceX operations. Similar blue swirls have been seen over the Barents Sea, New Zealand, east Africa, Hawaii (twice!), and Alaska…
It is occasionally possible to predict such spirals in advance, but not this time. The rocket's contents and initial orbit were secret.
We do, however, know the spiral's name: NROL-69…
Meanwhile, NOAA forecasters say that G2-class geomagnetic storms are possible later today, March 25th, when a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) is expected to hit Earth.
CIRs are transition zones between fast- and slow-moving streams of solar wind. They contain shock waves akin to CMEs.
Today's CIR is powered by a giant hole in the sun's atmosphere.
Keep your eyes to the sky!

Fuel dump? Great. Just great. What goes up or is spread out “up there” must come down. Being a pretty sight, if it is, doesn’t mitigate the yuk of the dump ingredients. Remember bunker fuel being spread into the atmosphere? Don’t hear about it now that the fellow that showed it to us, died. Still happening, I’m sure, though.
A bit-o-joy - 💐. here, flowering trees in bloom, daffodils, flowering shrubs, hyacinth, tulips, crocus, dandelion and other lovely little wild flora. In a sense, thumbing their little faces at the yuk stuff of all kinds coming down from “up there.”
