The gaseous material is flowing from a hole in the sun's atmosphere, which stretches across most of the sun's southern hemisphere. The million-kilometer-wide structure is shown in this extreme ultraviolet image from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:
This is a "coronal hole"--a region in the sun's atmosphere where magnetic fields have opened up, allowing solar wind to escape.
We've seen this coronal hole before--approximately every 28 days since February. Here it is in March:

It has been spinning around with the sun, emitting a stream of material akin to a giant lawn sprinkler. The stream encounter was particularly effective in March when it sparked auroras across many northern-tier US states.

I mean we will always need pilots in the cockpit. A commercial airliner has 3 auto-pilot systems in place. Once vectored it can be hand flown or set and forget. When a pilot gets their instructions they can fly the plane or just set it into the system. Ie turn left to 200Ā° and climb to 15000. They can set the turn, the altitude, clime rate and airspeed and the computer will do its thing.
Even if it went all auto pilot you'd still want someone there for a just in case. But you'd definitively want two. On long flights someone always needs to be awake and god forbid something happens to the pilot you'd want that second.
So where will be that āsafetyā pilot, then? On the tarmak with a remote controler? And now the helicopter attack on the civilian plane beginning of this year comes to my mindā¦
