Are we all just going to ignore the fact that many medieval manuscripts depicted humans fighting human-sized snails?
It seems that most of these illustrations come from around the same period of time, just a few decades during the medieval period. They were in manuscripts, prayer books, and other texts that all would have had a relatively small audience. And historians really don't know what they were supposed to mean, aside from a twist on the typical heroic knight fighting dangerous beasts. They speculate it could have simply been satire or a joke (a snail is an absurd foe), or maybe have had some political meaning (snails also represented the Lombards, church), but no one really knows for sure.
