The Dragnet clip was good. I remember watching it in the sixties. "One Adam 12, One Adam 12, a 211 in progress, One Adam 12 handle code 3." The discussion about pot, some true, some not. I tried pot when I was 14 yrs. old. I LOVED it! I spent practically my entire 15th year of my life STONED.
When I wasn't high, I was searching for it everywhere. I smoked it at the bus stop, on the bus, even in class doing "one hitters" behind the chemistry lab desks. We smoked in high school right in the halls and outside in the grass between the parking lot and the fence behind the school.
Every day at lunchtime at least 100 of us went to that spot, sat in the grass and smoked cigarettes and pot while the truant officer (Milt) walked back and forth, staring straight ahead. There were too many of us smoking it for them to bust all of us so they just let us smoke!
I was sitting in the woods on a fallen tree trunk, by myself one day after school drinking a beer from a case of Heineken I had stolen from work. I packed a bowl, struck the lighter and brought it to the bowl but before I could inhale the intoxicating smoke I was interrupted in my mind.
I don't want to say a "voice" came to me because it wasn't a voice but a complete message, given to my being in less than a nanosecond. The message was, "what are you doing, Son, don't you realize that you are on your way to an eternity of hopeless torment and desperation if you continue the path you're on?"
It was so clear, this message and it startled me because it was so brief and so succinct and clearly coming from outside of myself. It was real and it really made me think. Suddenly, I was aware that my life was being watched over by someone or something that CARED for me, which even came to me with LOVE and which I felt immediately upon experiencing it, desiring MORE of it but it never came at that time. That was it.
I mentioned this to one of my party friends later and he said that it was GOD calling me to Himself. His name was Lou and he knew God having already been a born again believer (but backslidden). He gave me a Bible and told me to read the New Testament to learn about what that message meant. I never had read the Bible before so I began to read but as I recall, none of it made much sense to me.
Very long story short, after many weeks of reading and asking my friend questions about the Bible, I was reading in the book of Romans when I came upon chapter 5 v. 1 (Good News Translation 1977) "Now that we have been put right with God through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
I was scarcely prepared for what came next. A Light came on in my heart like a billion watt spotlight FULL BLAST! I looked up from the page and said out loud, "it's all true, Lord God... it's the Truth I have found, isn't it? I BELIEVE IT, Lord Jesus I believe!"
Suddenly, like a light switch, the realization that God was, at that moment of my sudden belief, cleansing me of all of my sins and creating a NEW creature in Christ within me, my heart burst open with joy and the cliche, "my cup runneth over" took on a whole new meaning. This all happened immediately and instantaneously. The love that came to me that night changed my life forever. God was now living IN ME and His Holy Spirit SEALED me (Ephesians 1:13) with the promise of my eternal security in Him. I was born again that frigid night in February 1978.
My parents weren't thrilled with the news that I had been born again, they were very worldly and educated and didn't desire to have a "Jesus freak" for a son. It was never said that way but I knew it was truth. My mom was an uber liberal Catholic that believed only part of the canon of the church. She believed in the liberal views of the world, a sodomite sympathizer and pro "choice" et. al. My dad was a professor at the University of Pittsburgh, schooled in the doctrine of modern scientific enlightenment so my Biblical upbringing was nonexistent.
I very happily walked with the Lord for a while but slowly began to fall away from my new found faith. Not that I stopped BELIEVING but I began living like the world again. The temptations of this world, lack of support of my new worldview and high school peer pressure caused me to step back into the world but this time I was different.
I said all of this to say that while I was a pothead for over a year leading up to my salvation, I quickly learned that I couldn't smoke pot anymore. It was TOXIC for my soul!!! Every time I smoked it after my conversion I became so paranoid and the guilt I carried was so critical that it became something that I only did under peer pressure! And every single time I got "high" it hurt my spirit so much that I finally just stopped and refused to smoke it. I learned that alcohol was something that I did like and it helped to calm me and beer became my drug of choice during the rest of my adolescence and young adult life.
I was what the Bible calls a "backslider" or one that has been saved but goes back into the world. I rolled in the mud of this world for over a decade, dulling my inhibitions with alcohol but at the age of 30, true to His Promise, He called me back to Himself. I recommitted my life to Him, giving Him the control over me to lead me in what was His Plan for the rest of my life. I never stopped following Him since. I had overcome many bumps in the road but He was never far away from me after that time.
