How DID we manage to send men to the moon back in 1969, and even more amazing, bring them home again? When you go to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and other places and look inside those capsules and read about how Mission Control functioned and become aware of how utterly primitive those computer systems were, those achievements and the success of the space program back then just boggles the mind.
The train track/maintenace issues have previously been epic since at least the middle to late 70s. Having family that worked for the railroad back in the 40s the RRs used to have people checking, monitoring every certain mileage segment of tracks, usually 20 to 30, repair crews were plentiful and keep things in order. Middle to late 70s (had family working then) the decision was made to reduce maintenance staff and now most RRs have one maintenance crew that is covering 300 - 500 miles of track. Same thing with Train crews. Used to have 16 to 18, then 6, then 4 and by the 70s 3 an engineer, conductor and brakeman. Presently an engineer and brakeman but they are looking at going totally remote and testing with one person only then none. People gasp and ask things like what if the trains quits running 40 mile out in the middle of nowhere and the RRs said it was cheaper to have kind of a centrally located maintenance crew that would go out. and fix the issue. As for derailments we typically see 900 to over 1000 per year and have for many years. The reason this one was an Cherynoble type event was due to the combination of chemicals and other carried on. I think there have been 3 or 4 since then. Barely covered in the press. Likely the town will be a toxic mess. and over time (next 3 to 15 years) likely (I hope not) cancer will go up, people will die from various causes , all the while local officials will tout how safe and clean the town is. When the smoke plume from the blast went up, it just didn't go up to the main wind level. Likely particles and contaminants were in a 10 mile circle around the blast site. Also highly likely that the first responders (like 911) will suffer from various health issues even if they wore protective gear.
